9 PM Routine: A nightly reminder to remove valuables and fobs from vehicles and lock them has been published on the Borough’s Facebook and Twitter pages for the past month. In the year 2021 and, as of this writing in 2022, all of the vehicles stolen from the Upper Saddle River community were left outside of the garage, unlocked, and had the key fobs left inside. Please continue to secure your vehicles at all times, during the day and overnight, always remove fobs, and park inside the garage whenever possible. As there have been incidents during the daytime, it is important to keep vehicles locked at all times.
Extension of Settlement Agreement: On April 5, 2018, a settlement agreement was signed regarding the eruv installed by a New York State religious group. The eruv, originally covering 19% of the land area of the Borough, encompassing 638 acres and 557 homes, was cut back to 7.5% of the land area, and 253 acres with 230 homes. The agreement was signed by both parties for a total of three years. The eruv in Upper Saddle River connects the eruv in Mahwah and Montvale.
The Governing Body has reached an agreement that extends the settlement for another three years. There is no expansion of land area or additional homes involved.

Creative Gardens: The Borough has applied for a Bergen County Open Space grant for the purchase of Creative Gardens, in the amount of $1.7 million. This is 80% of the purchase price of $2.35 million. The former site of Creative Gardens, located at 409 East Saddle River Road, was purchased by the Borough last year. The 4.45-acre site had been approved for a four-home subdivision, however; when those plans did not move forward, the Governing Body decided to purchase the land for an agreed upon price of $2.35 million. This is the same process that we followed when purchasing the nine acres of land at One Lake Street, resulting in a $1.6 million grant award towards the initial purchase cost of $2 million. There is no guarantee of receiving the grant but we are cautiously optimistic. Residents will be kept updated as this moves forward. In the meanwhile, the process to designate the land as open space will begin with the anticipation of creating an attractive passive park.

A Message from the Upper Saddle River Police Department
The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial is located on E Street in Washington D.C. The walls of the memorial contain over twenty-three thousand names of officers from throughout the United States that gave the ultimate sacrifice while protecting others. Each year, the second week of May serves as “Police Week,” in our nation’s capital. Officers from every state participate in a Candlelight Vigil to honor fallen officers. Prior to the vigil, thousands of bicycle riders from departments far and near, conclude the Police Unity Tour. The tour is a 300 mile journey from the World Trade Center to Washington D.C. that culminates with a sea of blue riders traveling through and around the sacred walls of the memorial. The riders are surrounded by the surviving family members of the fallen, whose names are eternally etched into the stone.
Both active and retired members of the Upper Saddle River Police Department participate in the Unity Tour each year. This year’s participants were retired Sgt. Emmett McDowell, P.O. Anthony Pulizzano, P.O. Luke Gallo, and Captain Ed Kane.
Each one of our members agree that it is the most rewarding and moving experience of their career. Take time this month to pay tribute to the 619 new names added to the memorial walls in 2022 and please visit the website of the National Law Enforcement Memorial (nleomf.org).
